1The word of the LORD that came to Joel, son of Pethuel.2Hear this, elders, and listen, all you inhabitants of the land. Has this happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers?3Recount it to your sons, and your sons to their sons, and their sons to the next generation.4What was left of the gazam the arbeh ate, and what was left of the arbeh the yeleq ate, and what was left of the yeleq the chasil ate.5Awake, drunkards, and weep and wail, all you drinkers of wine, over sweet wine, for it is cut off from your mouths.6For a nation has come up against my land, mighty and without number. Its fangs are the fangs of a lion, and it has the grinding teeth of a lioness.7He has laid my vine waste and made my fig tree a stump. He has stripped it bare, stripped it, and cast it away; he has made its branches white.8Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.9Grain offering and libation are cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests who minister to the LORD mourn.10The field has been devastated; the ground has mourned because the grain has been devastated; the wine has dried up, the oil has languished.11Be ashamed, farmers; wail, vinedressers, over the wheat and over the barley, for the harvest of the field has perished.12The vine is ashamed and the fig tree has languished; the pomegranate also—palm and apple. All trees of the field have dried up, for joy has been disgraced from the sons of Adam.
